JavaScript Comments

JavaScript comments can be used to to explain and make the code more readable. JavaScript comments can also prevent execution of code.

It is possible to comment code as a single-line comment or as a multi-line comment.

Comments Best Practice

“Even bad code can function. But if the code isn’t clean, it can bring a development organization to its knees.” — Robert C. Martin (Uncle Bob)

Do not use long comments to describe bad code.

It is much better with a long descriptive name on methods or variables (and short methods).

Single line comments are most common used.
Block comments are often used for formal documentation.

Single Line Comments

Single line comments start with //.

Text from // and to the end of the line will be ignored by JavaScript. This will not be executed.

JS JavaScript - Single Line Comments

// Comments above the code
document.getElementById("myStatus").innerHTML = "Loading the page...";

var maxNumberOfPersonsInACar = 5; // Comments after the code

// Comments to ignore code execution
// if(carIsASevenSeater()) {
//    maxNumberOfPersonsInACar = maxNumberOfPersonsInACar + 2;
// }

Multi Line Comments

Multi-line comments start with /* and end with */.

Any text in the comment block between /* and */ will be ignored by JavaScript. This will not be executed.

JS JavaScript - Multi Line Comments

/*
This Comment Block describe that code will set the status-text as long as the page is loading.
After the page is loaded the status-text is removed.
*/
document.getElementById("myStatus").innerHTML = "Loading the page...";

/*
This Comment Block is used to ignore code execution
if(carIsASevenSeater()) {
   maxNumberOfPersonsInACar = maxNumberOfPersonsInACar + 2;
}
*/

BACK TO TOP

JavaScript is one of the 3 core language technologies of the World Wide Web that all web developers must learn:

1.      HTML to define the content of web pages.

2.      CSS to specify the layout of web pages.

3.      JavaScript to program the behavior of web pages.

JavaScript is a scripting or programming language that allows you to implement complex things on web pages. Every time a web page does more than just sit there and display static information for you to look at, displaying timely content updates, interactive maps, animated 2D/3D graphics, scrolling video jukeboxes, etc. − you can bet that JavaScript is probably involved.

The benefits of using JavaScript are:

1.      You can validate user input before sending the page off to the server. This saves server traffic, which means less load on your server.

2.      Immediate feedback to the visitors − They don't have to wait for a page reload to see if they have forgotten to enter something.

3.      Increased interactivity − You can create interfaces that react when the user hovers over them with a mouse or activates them via the keyboard.

4.      Richer interfaces − You can use JavaScript to include such items as drag-and-drop components and sliders to give a Rich Interface to your site visitors.
