JavaScript Date Input

The ISO format uses a strict standard in JavaScript.

Other formats are not well defined and might be browser specific.

JavaScript Date Output

JavaScript will always show output dates in full text string format:

Wed Mar 28 2018 10:00:00 GMT+0100 (Central European Standard Time)

JavaScript ISO Dates

JS JavaScript - JavaScript ISO Dates

// The complete date
var d = new Date("2018-08-25");
// The date without specifying the day
var d = new Date("2018-08");
// The date without specifying the month and day
var d = new Date("2018");
// The date with hours, minutes and seconds
var d = new Date("2018-08-28T12:00:00Z")

UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) is the same as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).

Omitting T or Z in a date-time string can give different result in different browser.

JavaScript Time Zones

JavaScript will use the browser's time zone when setting a date without specifying the time zone.

JavaScript will use the browser's time zone when getting a date without specifying the time zone.

E.g.: A browser/user from central US will get the date converted to CDT (Central US Daylight Time) even if the server has Date/Time created in GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).

JavaScript Short Dates

JS JavaScript - JavaScript Short Dates

// Short dates are written with an "MM/DD/YYYY" syntax
var d = new Date("08/25/2018");

JavaScript Long Dates

JS JavaScript - JavaScript Long Dates

// Long dates are most often written with a "MMM DD YYYY" syntax
var d = new Date("Aug 25 2018");
// Month and day can be in any order
var d = new Date("25 Aug 2018");
// Month can be written in full (August), or abbreviated (Aug)
var d = new Date("August 25 2018");
var d = new Date("Aug 25 2018");
// Commas are ignored and names are case insensitive
var d = new Date("AUGUST, 25, 2018");

JavaScript is one of the 3 core language technologies of the World Wide Web that all web developers must learn:

1.      HTML to define the content of web pages.

2.      CSS to specify the layout of web pages.

3.      JavaScript to program the behavior of web pages.

JavaScript is a scripting or programming language that allows you to implement complex things on web pages. Every time a web page does more than just sit there and display static information for you to look at, displaying timely content updates, interactive maps, animated 2D/3D graphics, scrolling video jukeboxes, etc. − you can bet that JavaScript is probably involved.

The benefits of using JavaScript are:

1.      You can validate user input before sending the page off to the server. This saves server traffic, which means less load on your server.

2.      Immediate feedback to the visitors − They don't have to wait for a page reload to see if they have forgotten to enter something.

3.      Increased interactivity − You can create interfaces that react when the user hovers over them with a mouse or activates them via the keyboard.

4.      Richer interfaces − You can use JavaScript to include such items as drag-and-drop components and sliders to give a Rich Interface to your site visitors.
